Most adult toy buyers spend their research time comparing vibration patterns and motor strength. Fewer spend it on material safety, which is unfortunate — the material in direct contact with mucous membranes matters more than any feature on the spec sheet. The adult novelty industry is largely unregulated, which means manufacturers can and do use materials that have no business being inside a human body. Knowing the short list of safe materials and the longer list of unsafe ones is the single most useful skill a buyer can develop.
The Safe List: Non-Porous and Stable
Three materials dominate the safe-toy market, and for good reason.
Medical-grade silicone is the gold standard for insertable toys. It is non-porous, hypoallergenic, stable at body temperature, and can be fully sterilized by boiling for three minutes. A genuine silicone toy will have no chemical smell out of the box, and its surface will feel uniform — no tacky spots, no grainy patches. Silicone is compatible with water-based lubricants but degrades on contact with silicone-based lube, a common mistake that turns a $60 toy into a gummy mess within weeks.
Borosilicate glass (the same material used in laboratory beakers and Pyrex) is non-porous, temperature-stable, and compatible with every lubricant on the market. Glass toys can be warmed or cooled for sensation play, and they will not shatter under normal use despite the intuitive fear. The main risk is dropping one on a hard floor — a chip means immediate retirement, no exceptions.
Stainless steel, specifically 316 surgical grade, shares glass’s non-porous and lubricant-compatible properties while being less fragile. Steel toys are heavier than their silicone equivalents, which some users prefer for the constant awareness of the toy’s presence. They also warm quickly to body temperature, making them feel less foreign on insertion than cold glass.
The Avoid List: Porous and Chemically Unstable
If a toy’s material description includes the words “jelly,” “rubber,” “PVC,” “TPE,” “TPR,” or “cyberskin,” treat it as a potential health hazard. These materials are porous — microscopic holes trap bacteria, bodily fluids, and cleaning chemicals that no amount of soap can fully remove. A porous toy used across multiple partners becomes a vector for bacterial vaginosis, UTIs, and in rare cases, bloodborne pathogens.
The more immediate concern is chemical leaching. PVC and jelly toys often contain phthalates — plasticizers added to make the material soft and flexible. Phthalates are endocrine disruptors that have been banned from children’s products in most developed countries but remain legal in adult novelties. A jelly toy that smells like a new shower curtain is off-gassing phthalates directly into tissue that absorbs them efficiently.
The Gray Area: Treated and Coated Materials
Some manufacturers coat porous cores with thin layers of polyurethane or silicone, then market the result as “skin-safe.” These coatings work for a few weeks but inevitably wear through at friction points. Once the coating is breached, the porous core underneath behaves exactly like an uncoated porous toy. If the price seems too good for the advertised material, suspect a coating over a cheaper core.
A harder gray area is ABS plastic, which is non-porous and safe for external toys (wand attachments, bullet sleeves) but is too rigid for most insertable applications. ABS is a reasonable choice for vibrators with hard outer shells; it is a poor choice for anything that needs to flex with the body.
Practical Buying Rules
First, if the listing does not explicitly name the material, do not buy it. Reputable manufacturers list material composition on the packaging and in product documentation. Second, if the price is dramatically lower than equivalent silicone toys from established brands, the material is probably not what the listing claims. Third, the smell test is real — a chemical odor out of the box means the toy is off-gassing, and off-gassing chemicals are exactly what you do not want absorbed through mucous membranes.
Care and Lifespan
Silicone toys, properly cared for, last five to ten years. Wash with warm water and mild unscented soap after each use, air-dry on a clean towel, and store in a breathable bag away from other silicone toys (silicone-on-silicone contact causes chemical degradation). Glass and steel are effectively lifetime purchases; sterilize between partners by boiling or wiping with 70 percent isopropyl alcohol.
Material safety is not glamorous, but it is the one purchase criterion that directly affects long-term health. Spending twenty minutes verifying material composition before checkout is the cheapest insurance available.
